Aaron Eichorst’s Summer’s Cauldron reveals the surprising results of his inimitable aesthetic. Capturing extraordinary creatures, flourishing flora, and engaging figures who inhabit a vivid world, Eichorst masterfully reflects on the experiences of basking in nature's most fiery season while praising its innate, captivating charm. Spellbound by nature’s beauty, the artist seeks to convey a feeling of wonder and awe for its intricacies—the iridescent feathers of a tree swallow, the bold patterns of a butterfly wing, a rhododendron in full bloom.
The design of these works are inspired by the ornamental style known as Grotesque—a scheme of interlaced garlands and fantastic human/animal figures which were intended to ward off evils. Unlike their ancient counterparts, each of Eichorst’s pieces features a central, hand-painted depiction of a person or animal that meets the gaze of the viewer, peering through a portal. The viewer is thus coaxed into the mind’s eye of the artist, creating a dynamic mirror.
The artist uses symmetry as a framework to stage the subjects of each painting, but also as a tool to establish a predictable structure that he can subtly break to create visual tension. Shining light on objects, creatures and people from the artist’s personal experience, Eichorst hopes to convey the delight and reverence that he feels while also bringing new life to an ancient art form.
This exhibition is a Call for Submissions Season 48 pick and is generously sponsored by the Galdencio-Pontillo Family, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and an Enriching Communities grant from the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF).
