ABOUT THE ARTISTS

AKEMI OHIRA

Akemi Ohira is an artist who specializes in intaglio, lithography and relief printmaking processes, as well as egg tempera, acrylic and oil paintings. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Printmaking and Drawing concentrations with the Charles Goodwin Sands Memorial Medal from Cornell University, and a Master of Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University. She is a recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including Southeastern College Arts Conference (SECAC) Visual Arts Grant and Professional Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. She teaches Printmaking and Drawing at the University of Virginia where she is an Associate Professor of Art.

DERRICK J. WALLER

Derrick J. Waller is a proud graduate of the University of Virginia and has spent his whole life in the great state of Virginia, currently residing in Charlottesville. His daily grind is pharmaceutical research, but Derrick's expressive outlet is photography, where he finds great joy in documenting candid moments of everyday life. Derrick is a founding member of the Charlottesville Blark Arts Collective and his work has been featured nationally in the New York Times, NPR, and Runner's World along with various galleries and publications in Virginia, including the Second Street Gallery, McGuffey Arts Center, Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative, New City Arts Initiative, Welcome Gallery, Studio IX, Candela Books and Gallery, the CVille, Vinegar Hill Magazine and Charlottesville Tomorrow. When Derrick doesn't have a camera in his hand, you will find him spending time with his beautiful wife, Sarah, and baby girl, Josephine.
