Introduction to Embroidery with Brielle DuFlon

During the month of September 2021, Second Street Gallery and Common House presented a hands-on workshop series featuring select local artists from Second Street Gallery’s group exhibition and fundraiser, Teeny Tiny Trifecta 4

Introduction to Embroidery with Brielle DuFlon was the first workshop in this series and took place at Common House on September 7, 2021. During this workshop with artist Brielle DuFlon, participants had the opportunity to learn several basic stitches, the core components of embroidery, and took home instructional practice materials to create their own designs to upcycle/mend clothing with their new skills. This workshop included a small materials kit (including needles and thread, embroidery hoops, fabric, and instructional handouts to practice at home) available for attendees in person.

Brielle DuFlon is a Charlottesville-based textile and mixed-media artist with a studio at McGuffey Art Center. DuFlon is a local small business owner and arts organizer within the Charlottesville arts community. DuFlon spent the first 18 years of her life in Antigua, Guatemala, and identifies as a Third Culture Kid: a person caught between cultures, who carries both cultures inside them. She communicates the complexity of her identity through the colors, textures and craft (weaving, embroidery, fiber) that were part of her every day, growing up in a small Central American town. DuFlon’s work has been exhibited at local galleries in the Central Virginia area, most notably in a recent solo exhibition at New City Arts’ Welcome Gallery in October 2020. Follow her work on her website (www.brielleduflon.com) or her Instagram (@brielleduflon).
