On February 4, 2022, Second Street Gallery celebrated the opening evening of two solo exhibitions: Stuart Robertson's “A Suh Wi Dweet” in the Main Gallery and Marley Nichelle's “Ghana to Gullah” in the Dové Gallery. The gallery was open on First Friday, February 4, with the exhibiting artists present throughout the evening to chat with visitors.
Stuart Robertson's A Suh Wi Dweet in the Main Gallery features over 20 mixed-media paintings developed between 2021 and 2022, that reflect on a decade of questions from a life lived between Jamaica, The United States and Europe. This presentation at Second Street Gallery marks Robertson’s first professional solo exhibition, providing the community of Charlottesville and beyond with a look at new work from an emerging artist committed to representing his family, friends, and community with care. Using editorial narrative, Marley Nichelle’s Ghana to Gullah in the Dové Gallery takes the viewer on the artist’s journey from Ghana back to his home in the low country of South Carolina, in order to document and educate others on the history of Gullah culture. Serving as a platform to amplify the Gullah peoples, the curated selection of images featured in this exhibition highlight the roots of Ghanaian and Gullah culture.
