Second Street Gallery is pleased to present Sticker Work, a solo exhibition of new work by Richmond-based artist Hannah Diomataris, in the Dové Gallery from December 6, 2024 - January 24, 2025. Diomataris’ work dives deep into nostalgic memory and sentimental material culture, transforming society’s mundane scraps into a tapestry of intricate contemplation. The artist pulls from widely circulated icons of consumer-driven society – items that are customarily used, established obsolete and ultimately discarded – and embarks on a laborious and meditative practice of recontextualizing unchecked overconsumption.

We hope you’ll join us for December’s First Friday reception on December 6, 2024 from 5:30-7:30PM to celebrate the opening of this exhibition and meet the exhibiting artist.

This exhibition is generously sponsored by Camille Gerrick, Suzanne Tanner-Chitwood, the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Artist Statement

I find that keeping my hands moving through a repetitive, meditative process is crucial to staying centered amidst the overwhelming flood of information, societal pressures, and environmental issues. The apparent investment of labor and time are prominent throughout my meticulous process. I source discarded and obsolete adhesive labels once used for organizing products and information. Peeling and placing thousands of hand cut alpha-numeric stickers result in an expanse of disrupted language that compounds into a tapestry of tally marks. Chaos and disorder gain structure and form. The ordinary transforms into a soothing, woven surface, allowing space for contemplation and reflection for the viewer.

Sticker Work continues my exploration into working in large scale. The tension between chaos and structure remains apparent in the visual of each piece, while also a constant in life and embedded in my personality. The physical act of making is my meditative practice and the completed work is my earnest attempt to sort through and make sense of this inner turmoil: the simultaneous existence of having everything be everywhere, and wanting it all to be lined up and orderly. The vast expanse of the works included in Sticker Work both draws the viewer in close, and pushes them to step back to allow space for contrasting perspectives.

Creating the body of work for Sticker Work would not have been possible without my incredibly loving support network of my partner, family and friends. Their support was an integral guiding force while I peeled and placed each sticker unit. Thank you.
