Angelica Credle
Angelica Credle is a visual artist whose practice encompasses both painting and collage, focusing on themes of Black existence, identity, and liberation. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) Painting and Printmaking program, she served as the head of the VCUarts Student Coalition, advocating for student voices in the arts. Credle’s work is informed by Afrofuturism and Afropessimism, exploring alternate futures for Black people free from subjugation while confronting the ongoing legacies of slavery and systemic oppression. Drawing on historical references such as Drexciya and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, her paintings feature inverted colors reminiscent of photographic negatives, engaging with the invisibility and hyper-visibility of Black identity. Currently, she teaches elementary art, fostering creativity and artistic exploration in the next generation while continuing to pursue her own practice.
