Born in 1975, Demarcus McGaughey is a Texas-born, New York-based artist known for his mixed-media art that celebrates the essence of people of color. Drawing inspiration from Barkley Hendricks and pop art, his work features a dynamic blend of acrylics, paper collages, photography, and fabrics from his grandmother's quilts. McGaughey's art, influenced by his global travels and personal experiences, powerfully conveys stories of self-actualization and empowerment, often focusing on the eyes to reveal the soul's narrative.
Initially gravitating towards graphic design for storytelling, McGaughey found his true voice in painting, allowing him to share stories uniquely. His journey in art, spanning two decades, reflects a deep interest in human psychology and the stories individuals tell themselves, a theme he explores both in his artwork and as a certified life coach.
McGaughey's impactful portraits have garnered attention from notable entities like Beyoncé Knowles Carter and Dr Pepper. His work has been showcased in prestigious venues across New York, Texas, Spain, and France, including residencies and exhibitions at Mas el sigols, Nfinit Foundation Arts Residency, Art Crawl Harlem, Chateau Orquevaux, Ma’s House, and Willohouse. Through his art, McGaughey aims to amplify narratives of Black success and resilience, leaving a lasting impression on the world of contemporary art.
