Philip Ward, Apple Pie and Tulips, oil, acrylic, and oil stick on canvas

“I am from Yorkshire in Northern England but have been living and painting in Virginia since 1982. As the virus was spreading around the world, I was obviously keeping in close contact with my family and friends through e-mail and phone-calls.

Late on Friday, 27 March, I was in the studio considering if the painting was finished and if it could be called ‘Apple Pie and Tulips’. The next morning I received e-mail photographs of the tulips in my friend Barry’s garden in Kent, England. There is no particular significance to this, except it may show we are on similar wavelengths, and have been ever since we met at art college in 1970.”
