April 28: Aja Simone

Prompt: create a drawing using an unexpected medium, inspired by Ed Ruscha’s Stains series.

Usually when we think of paintings and works on paper, we think of artists using traditional materials when creating work, such as oil paint, acrylic, or graphite. Exhibiting artist Michelle Gagliano used shoe polish on some of the works in her 2019 exhibition Murmurations, and Noŋgirrŋa Marawili uses recycled printer toner in her works currently on view at Second street Gallery. American artist Ed Ruscha (most often associated with the Pop Art Movement) experimented with a range of materials in his Stains series including red wine, beet juice, chocolate syrup, blackberry juice, tomato paste, coffee, raw eggs and grass stains.
