COURTNEY COKER

“For 12 years we have lived in this house. Enough time spent in a home to know precisely where the sun sets in the evening and from which direction most bad weather descends. Two of our three daughters learned to walk in this kitchen. We buried one dog and gained 9 chickens, worked new jobs and started new schools. Planted trees and gardens.

Yet these past few months with a pandemic and state mandated orders to stay at home I have become witness to light in an all new way. And how it manifests itself in corners and floorboards all around this old farmhouse. As the cool and wet spring slowly leads into summer the light begins to slant towards June, solstice, July. Bouncing into the east facing bathroom accompanied by shadows of leaves and lively trees summer sun declares itself. This house is dark in winter. But these days it tries to shine.

Vibrant summer colors and sharp shadows. They coexist in this space I call home. Always shifting, moving. I pause to watch and wonder what the next season will bring - what new shapes might manifest in the ever shifting light.”
