“I relish photographs that reveal beauty in the mundane. While I knew the square format used by David Hockney was not required, I decided to follow it as a discipline to stretch my abilities. So, looking for scenes in the house was one thing. Looking for scenes that fit well into a square format was a greater challenge.
Most of the scenes were shot as I found them. The remaining few were arranged, but only slightly. All the elements were already present. I simply moved them around a little or removed some clutter. All of them were taken with natural light, which often meant long exposures on a tripod to get a high f-stop for depth of field with low ISO.
I tried to make each image stand on its own. But, really, some are better than others. However, as part of a collection, I feel they each contribute something. Some pictures don’t seem to fit, like the hand with trowel or the tiger lily. But that is how life is. We create lots of patterns in our lives. But there are always pieces that just don’t fit in. Good thing.”
